Breast Cancer talk, letter by parent 1 Dec 2007

Dear PSG,

I attended the talk on Breast Cancer @ GRPS on 1 Dec 2007. I personally support Greenridge Primary School for organizing such an important talk. The two speakers were Dr Tan Yah Yuen, Consultant Breast Surgeon and Dr Esther Chuwa, Associate Consultant, from KK Breast Unit. They spared their time apart from their busy schedules all the way to our school to make known to women on the risk of Breast Cancer which is common in Singapore now. The topics covered were very useful and informative. The information given helped me to understand the facts, risks, symptoms, treatment and Mammography. I am very sure that everyone went home with a good knowledge, useful information and awareness. I hope GRPS will organise such session next year and hoping that many women not only from age 40 and above will attend but younger women should make their time to attend, anyway it is free and it is held at the school, very convenient. I personally thanked Mrs Chew, Mrs Tan and teachers for inviting the two honorable speakers.Thank you.Regards Massita

Visit to Old Folk Home organised by Staff Welfare

On 20 November 2007, 22 teachers set off at 1 pm to Clementi and Marsiling with the objectives of Hands on, Minds on, Hearts on to help the less fortunate. With the donations from GRPS staff, we are able to purchase essential items like canned food, biscuits, instant beverages and toiletries.
The 60 vulnerable senior citizens waited excitedly for us at their void deck. Our warm and caring teachers played games with the seniors. This brought much delight and cheers to them. They enjoyed the snacks and drinks that we bought for them. Through this experience, I realized although money is the most practical gift, it is not what they want. What they desire is intangible and that is our care and concern.
On behalf of SWC, I would like to express my appreciation to those teachers who participate in this meaningful activity. We look forward to your continued support to make a difference in our community.

Appreciation to all parents helpers during the food carnival 16/11

Dear Parent Volunteers,

I would like to express my sincere appreciation and thanks to all volunteers who had sacrificed their precious and selfless time and efforts towards the bazaar nite. Thru all your efforts, Janet had informed that we managed to raise a total of $981. It is a remarkable result as it was only abt 3hrs and I can see that each and everyone was so enthusiastic. We have once again proven that WE CAN DO! WE MAKE IT! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE cos the money raised will be channelled to the needy pupils, local charities adopted by the school and overseas missions. These funds will definitely help and go a long way.
The response was so good and out of expections that I believed we all regret that we did not make more! But never mind, there will be more opportunities going forward and as a consolation to ourselves, the food were all sold and there is no wastage, except that due to the power failure, we did not managed to finish the steamed corn.
Perhaps this is something for us to learn and have contigency plan in future to prevent similar occurences.
I understand that many of you had graciously donated in your own ways by not claiming for the food prepared. For those who are claiming, I believe they also claim below costs and all these are something that deserves my salute to you all. Good deeds begets good deeds.
For those who are claiming, pls feel free to claim from Janet and I will shoulder the full expenses and settle with her. I could only help to contribute in planning, organising and networking due to my work schedule and other community involvements. To show my appreciation to my supportive parent volunteers, I will not hesistate to donate the total claims.
On befalf of the Chairman and PSG committee, I would like to thank all of you again and we will let you know how we could contribute to the next project, Orientation Day.

Yours sincerely,
Mdm Shirley Soh, Vice Chairman, 2007 PSG Exco

In this Clean & Green Week , I had attended a gardening workshop at the school. It is a great opportunity for me to learn what is terrarium plants that we can keep it in our home. Mr Terence had taught me a lot about nature & how we shld value nature.
Even we don't have much time, atleast I know how I could create a small garden in a glass and even in our Hunny water bottle, it's really creative. Thank you to Mrs Janet Ng who had invited me to this workshop , it's really enjoyable moments for me.

NE trail for parent & child bonding

During the June holidays, the PSG/SFE team organised an NE(National education) Trail for parents & children bonding. The NE trail tapped on the school existing NE packages, which had won the school the prestigious LKY NE award in 2005. There were 5 stations spreading throughout Fort Canning. The trail provided a lively & authentic learning experience for the parent and child to find out and share about the history of Singapore while promoting parent/child bonding. It was a fun-filled and educational morning spent in the lush greenery of Fort Canning Park. Each family was given a map and question booklet. Everyone had a wonderful time running around the park, looking for answers to complete the Trail.
At the end of the trail, a sharing session was conducted by the teacher in charge, Serene, regarding the NE programmes in GRPS. A certificate of participation endorsed by the principal was given to all participants.

What we did last Raya...

I had a big group of students visited my house for Hari Raya celebration this year. it was a great fun as they learnt what's the meaning & how we celebrate Hari Raya because among all the students most of them are non-muslim. This event was proposed for P5 students that been arranged by our Malay teachers - Mdm Siti Badariah, Mr Shahrin, Mdm Zakiah & Miss Kaisha.

Even there was time constraint, we managed to visit 4 houses, but unfortunately not all of them could make it because they have to report back to school as we had scheduled earlier.

Thank you for all the teachers that made my Hari Raya the most enjoyable this year. Hope we could have it again next year or even every year....

My Internal Compass--by Dr Benedict Tan

Compasses are found in many boats. Other than giving us our sense of direction, sailing compasses also serve as tactical tools by helping us detect very subtle shifts in the wind direction.
There is a second compass on board, and that is the one within the sailor.

Improving Oneself versus Beating Others

I feel it is crucial to know why we do what we do. Do we compete to improve ourselves, or do we compete to defeat others? I feel that as we encourage competition in our schools and workplace, we need to be clear about this. People who compete simply to defeat others do not go far ultimately.

The most common mistake that sailors make is to race against another sailor – your greatest rival is not another sailor, it is the elements, namely the shifts in the wind. Sailors who are focused on beating a particular opponent very often miss critical wind shifts.
I compete to better myself, not to defeat others.

Be clear about our ultimate objective
Is the ultimate objective really to win an Olympic medal? If we hothouse a few individuals, and one of them wins an Olympic medal, what is the direct benefit to the country?
nIf we put in place a framework that sees thousands of enthusiastic young sailors competing and improving themselves, and building their characters through the sport, isn’t that worth a lot more to the country, even if not one of these sailors win an Olympic medal?
Hence, it is clear to me that the greater good is the participation and competition that comes from a sound framework, rather than the Olympic medal.

The Moulding Process
If you come to my home, you will notice that there is not a single trophy displayed. The reason is that the true treasure is not the physical trophy or medal, but the work process that I have so painstakingly moulded over the years, through repeated failures and painful lessons. My current and future performance is dependent on my work process.

Pushing the limits
My work process, if not appreciated and maintained through continued analysis and testing, can deteriorate and become redundant. I continue to accept challenges, to push myself, to test my limits, to keep learning, in order to improve my work process. There is much more to be done.

Enlightened Citizenry
To me, an enlightened citizen is simply one who sees the big picture and realizes that he or she is part of a web, and that web is society.
Society can thrive only if its citizens contribute to the greater good; the individual can thrive only if the society thrives.
There are critics who feel that Singaporeans are becoming self-centred. I wish, however, that Singaporeans are, at the same time, smart enough to realize that we must contribute to society and help our society to thrive, so that we may thrive.
This is similar to my training principle – I share with and help my sparring partners to improve, so that they can push me harder and help me improve.

Enlightened citizenry, to me, also means being pro-active, that is doing something about it. Singaporeans have learnt to be critical, but have not learnt to do anything positive to rectify the situation.
We complain, but when it’s time to do something about it, we leave it to others to do the job. This arises because many do not see that being part of the web means active, not passive, participation.

PSG Visit To Old Folks Home

Date : 3rd Sept 2007

Time : 1.30pm - 3.30pm

Venue : Tai Hwa Kwan Society, Toa Payoh Lor 5

The parents & children team played BINGO game with the old folks. The children helped to row out and track the numbers, put up large display sign of numbers called out, delivered little gifts like tissue, oilment, biscuits, etc as the old folk managed to strike a bingo. The parents in turn partnered the old folks with failing eyesight to cancel out the numbers on their card. the parent & children also cheered and applaused everytime the old folks striked a bingo. It's a really a heart warming scene. More and more old folks joined in the game when they saw the joyous mood. In particular, there was one senile old man who was not able to comprehend what's happening but he gamely joined in the fun and clapped his hands to follow what the parents volunteers are doing.

"little gifts"

"failing eyesight can't stop me bingoing"

"BINGO!"
